Mayors Committee
          for a Green Future

The Mayors Committee for a Green Future got its start in 2006, when the League’s Executive Director met with two environmentally committed mayors, Meryl Frank of Highland Park and Fred Profeta of Maplewood.  The three agreed upon the goal of fostering environmental progress throughout the state at the local level.

On July 18, 2006, Mayor Frank convened a group of environmental leaders and experts in Highland Park.  Next, the MCGF held its second meeting on March 15, 2007 at the Edward J. Bloustein School at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, with 65 people in attendance. At that meeting, Mayor Profeta first broached the idea of certifying municipalities as "green" if they satisfied certain criteria.  This was further discussed at the League's Annual Conference in November of 2006, and began to take shape when the MCGF partnered with the Municipal Land Use Center at the College of New Jersey and the New Jersey Sustainable State Institute at Rutgers University in 2007.  After more than a year of intensive work by approximately 150 volunteers from the academic, state agency, business, and local government communities, the Sustainable Jersey program took final form and was launched in February of 2009. Moving forward, the MCGF will be identifying and promoting the highest-priority sustainability issues.

Representatives from the Mayors Committee for a Green Future have been speaking at green conferences, local fairs and town councils to rally the troops. The group has made over 40 speaking appearances across the state in the first few months since the Sustainable Jersey program’s inception.  If you would like to arrange a speaker at your event or if you need more information, contact the Sustainable Jersey Outreach Coordinator, Kristy Ranieri at 973.762.1510.
