Dear Mayor:
As your newly elected league president, I
attended the National League of Cities' (NLC) 79th Annual
Conference of Cities this past week in Salt Lake City, Utah,
with our Executive Director Bill Dressel and numerous other
elected officials from our State.
Mayor John DeStefano, Jr., of New Haven, Connecticut, President
of NLC, has launched a national effort to secure funding
for America's first responders in our cities and towns.
I have pledged our association's support of this effort,
and I am asking that you join the thousands of municipal
officials throughout our Nation by doing the following:
- Send a letter to President Bush by December 16, 2002
urging him to provide funding to our police, fire, and
emergency medical personnel and other first responders.
- Enclose badges or patches from your community's first
responder personnel as a reminder of the important role
they play in every community in America.
- Send copies of your letter to Senate Majority Leader
Trent Lott, Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, Senate
Minority Leader Tom Daschle, House Minority Leader Nancy
Pelosi and our own Senators and Representatives in Congress.
The attached pages contain a sample
letter to the President and address for the Congressional
and Senate leaders.
I am also requesting that you issue press statements to
your local media advising them of your actions and, most
importantly, send copies to the League office.
Thank you for your efforts, and if you have any questions,
please call League Executive Director Bill Dressel at 609
695-3481, extension 22.
Sincerely,
J. Christian Bollwage
Mayor, Elizabeth
League President
