The League plans to dissect the findings Wednesday, November 15, during the 2 p.m. session, ‘The Property Tax Crisis.’ “It’s the hot button issue affecting quality of life in New Jersey,” said William G. Dressel Jr., the group’s executive director, “And it’s happening right in the middle of our conference. Our position is that we must move our state from the current 46 percent reliance on property taxes, down to the national average of about 30 percent. We’re all anxious to hear how they’re proposing that happen.
“We were encouraged by last week’s preview of the recommendations,” continued Dressel. “An immediate 20% reduction in property taxes would make a great down payment to the people of our State. Easing service sharing and consolidation will help, as will meaningful pensions and benefit reforms. But on these, as on the new school funding formula, we need to study the specifics that will only be available on Wednesday. We want to be able to quantify the impact of the recommendations and to assess the future of tax reform. Will it be reliable for years to come? Will it be sustainable? And how long will we have to wait before we get down to the national average?”
The League’s “Property Tax Crisis” session - which will feature Mayor Gary Passanante of Somerdale, Speaker Joe Roberts, Senate Majority Leader Bernard Kenny, Senate Minority Leader Leonard Lance and Assembly Republican Leader Alex DeCroce - will take place in the Atlantic City Convention Center, on Wednesday, November 15, at 2:00 p.m., in Rooms 201/202
